Mint Julep - Bourbon & Fresh Mint Kentucky Derby Classic

The Mint Julep is a bourbon cocktail built with fresh mint, sugar, water, and a mountain of crushed ice. Cool, aromatic, and whiskey-forward, this IBA classic is inseparable from Kentucky Derby tradition.

Few cocktails make crushed ice work as hard as the Mint Julep. Bourbon remains firmly at the center while fresh mint, a restrained measure of sugar, and steady dilution soften and cool the whiskey. The Mint Julep cocktail is simple in ingredients but depends on gentle muddling, plenty of ice, and a properly chilled serve.

From Early Juleps to Derby Tradition

Juleps existed in America before bourbon became their defining spirit, with early versions using spirits such as brandy and rum. During the 1800s, bourbon became closely associated with the drink in Kentucky. The Mint Julep later became a fixture at Churchill Downs and was established as the Kentucky Derby's official drink during the 1930s.

What You'll Need

Ingredients

  • Bourbon - provides the oak, vanilla, caramel, and whiskey backbone.
  • Mint Sprigs - supply the drink's fresh herbal aroma and flavor.
  • Powdered Sugar - adds restrained sweetness and dissolves easily.
  • Water - helps dissolve the sugar before the bourbon and ice are added.

Rye whiskey can replace bourbon for a spicier variation, although it changes the classic Kentucky profile. Simple syrup can replace the sugar and water for convenience, but the current IBA specification uses the two separately.

Equipment

  • Julep cup or metal mug
  • Jigger
  • Teaspoon
  • Muddler
  • Long spoon
  • Crushed or cracked ice

The Ice Is Part of the Recipe

A Mint Julep should not feel like bourbon poured over a few cubes. Crushed or cracked ice creates rapid chilling and controlled dilution while allowing the mint aroma to stay prominent. The traditional metal vessel reinforces the effect by becoming noticeably cold and frosty as the drink is stirred.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Use rye whiskey for a drier, spicier take.
  • Replace the sugar and water with a small amount of simple syrup for faster preparation.
  • Try demerara sugar for a deeper molasses note.
  • Use spearmint when available for the familiar fresh julep aroma.
  • Serve in a sturdy rocks glass if a metal julep cup or mug is unavailable.
  • Add seasonal fruit only when intentionally making a julep variation rather than the IBA classic.

Helpful Tips

  • Muddle the mint gently. Pressing hard enough to shred it can introduce harsh vegetal flavors.
  • Pack the vessel generously with crushed or cracked ice.
  • Stir until the outside of a metal vessel becomes very cold and frosty.
  • Place the garnish mint close to the straw or drinking edge so its aroma reaches the nose.
  • Lightly slap the garnish sprig between your hands before serving to release its aroma.
  • For a party, pre-portion the bourbon but build each drink over fresh crushed ice shortly before serving.
