Three Dots and a Dash - Rhum Agricole, Falernum & Allspice Tiki Cocktail
Three Dots and a Dash combines rhum agricole, aged rum, falernum, allspice dram, citrus, honey, and Angostura bitters in Donn Beach's World War II-era tiki classic. Layered rum, warm spice, fresh citrus, and crushed ice make it complex without losing its refreshing tropical character.
Advanced
The Three Dots and a Dash is a classic tiki cocktail built around two distinct rum styles, bright citrus, honey, and concentrated Caribbean spice. Rhum agricole gives the drink grassy cane character, aged rum adds richness, and small measures of falernum and allspice dram create a layered spice profile that develops as the crushed ice slowly dilutes the drink.
Victory in a Glass
Donn Beach created the Three Dots and a Dash during World War II. Its name refers to three dots followed by a dash in Morse code, the letter V, which became closely associated with "Victory" during the war. The garnish carries the idea into the glass, using three cherries as the dots and a rectangular piece of pineapple as the dash.
What You'll Need
Ingredients
- Rhum Agricole - provides grassy, aromatic sugarcane character and forms the main spirit base.
- Blended Aged Rum - adds oak, caramel, and deeper aged-rum richness.
- Falernum - contributes lime, ginger, almond, and warm spice.
- St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram - supplies concentrated allspice and baking-spice depth.
- Lime Juice - brings the sharp acidity needed to balance the sweet ingredients.
- Orange Juice - softens the lime with fresh citrus sweetness.
- Honey Syrup - adds rounded floral sweetness and body.
- Angostura Bitters - reinforces the spice structure with aromatic bitterness.
If blended aged rum is unavailable, another flavorful aged Caribbean rum is the closest practical substitute. Allspice dram or pimento dram can replace St. Elizabeth when necessary. Keep rhum agricole in the drink whenever possible because its grassy cane character is central to the flavor.

More Than a Sweet Tiki Drink
The recipe contains several sweet ingredients, but it is structured rather than sugary. Lime provides firm acidity, rhum agricole keeps the base dry and aromatic, and bitters prevent the honey and liqueurs from becoming flat. Flash blending incorporates the crushed ice quickly, producing the cold, lightly aerated texture characteristic of many classic tiki drinks.
Substitutions & Variations
Aged agricole can give the drink a rounder profile than an unaged rhum agricole. A darker aged rum can deepen the molasses and oak notes in the secondary rum portion. If a drink mixer is unavailable, shake vigorously with crushed ice and pour unstrained, though the texture will differ from the traditional flash-blended method.
Helpful Tips
Do not run a household blender continuously. Use a very short pulse so the drink remains a crushed-ice cocktail rather than becoming a frozen drink. Fresh lime and orange juice make a noticeable difference because the recipe relies on relatively small citrus measures. Use a honey syrup that pours easily when cold. Add extra crushed ice after pouring to create the tall, packed presentation associated with the drink.
