Frozen Mudslide - Vodka, Kahlua and Baileys Dessert Cocktail
The Frozen Mudslide blends vodka, Kahlua®, Baileys Irish Cream, and vanilla ice cream into a thick dessert cocktail with rich coffee and cream flavor. Serve this boozy milkshake after dinner or at warm-weather parties.
Intermediate
The Frozen Mudslide combines vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, and vanilla ice cream in one thick, frosty drink. It has the smooth texture of a milkshake, balanced coffee and cocoa notes, and enough spirit to remain firmly in cocktail territory. Serve it as an after-dinner drink or a cold dessert for casual gatherings.
From Caribbean Bar Drink to Blended Favorite
The Mudslide is commonly linked to the 1970s and the Wreck Bar in the Cayman Islands, where a creamy mixture of vodka, coffee liqueur, and Irish cream became a resort favorite. Frozen versions later added ice or ice cream, turning the drink into the rich dessert cocktail now found on beach-bar and restaurant menus.
What You'll Need
Ingredients
- Vodka: Provides a clean alcoholic base without competing with the creamy flavors.
- Kahlua®: Adds roasted coffee flavor and sweetness.
- Baileys Irish Cream: Brings creaminess, cocoa notes, and mild Irish whiskey character.
- Vanilla Ice Cream: Creates the thick body and soft vanilla finish.
No Kahlua®? Use another coffee liqueur such as Tia Maria or Mr Black.
No Baileys? Substitute another Irish cream liqueur with a similar texture.
For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free vanilla ice cream and a plant-based Irish cream liqueur.
Equipment
- Blender
- Jigger
- Hurricane Glass
- Bar spoon, optional for adding garnish
Coffee, Cream, and a Milkshake Texture
This drink works because each ingredient has a clear role. Vodka supplies structure, Kahlua® brings coffee depth, Baileys adds creamy cocoa flavor, and vanilla ice cream binds everything into a smooth dessert. The equal one-ounce pours keep the liqueurs noticeable without overwhelming the six ounces of ice cream.
Substitutions & Variations
- Chocolate Mudslide: Add chocolate syrup or replace the vanilla ice cream with chocolate ice cream.
- Salted Caramel Mudslide: Blend in caramel sauce and finish with a small pinch of flaky salt.
- Cold Brew Mudslide: Add a small splash of cold brew for a stronger coffee note. Add extra ice cream if needed to preserve the texture.
- Rum Mudslide: Replace the vodka with aged rum for vanilla, caramel, and oak notes.
- Less Sweet Version: Use a less-sweet coffee liqueur and skip syrup-based garnishes.
Helpful Tips
- Let very firm ice cream soften for a few minutes so the blender can process it evenly.
- Chill the glass before blending to keep the drink thick longer.
- Start with no added milk. Add only a small splash if the mixture will not move through the blender.
- Drizzle chocolate syrup inside the glass before pouring for a clean striped presentation.
- Top with whipped cream, grated chocolate, or a light dusting of cocoa powder.
- Serve immediately because the texture loosens as the ice cream melts.
- For a batch, multiply all ingredients evenly and blend only as much as the blender can handle safely.
