The Scorpion blends light rum and brandy with fresh citrus and almond orgeat, producing a tiki cocktail that is fruity without losing its structure. Orange juice gives it body, lime keeps the sweetness focused, and crushed ice makes the finished drink especially refreshing.

A Mid-Century Tiki Favorite

The Scorpion became associated with American tiki culture during the mid-twentieth century, although its exact formula varies widely. Some versions are served as large-format bowls, while others are built as individual cocktails. Most share a combination of rum, brandy, citrus juice, and orgeat, creating a bridge between tropical punches and classic sours.

What You’ll Need

Ingredients

  • Light rum: Provides a clean sugarcane base without overpowering the citrus.
  • Brandy: Adds dried fruit, grape, and oak depth.
  • Orgeat almond syrup: Supplies sweetness, almond flavor, and a fuller texture.
  • Orange juice: Adds soft citrus sweetness and body.
  • Lime juice: Provides the sharp acidity needed to balance the orgeat and orange juice.

No light rum? Use a lightly aged rum for additional vanilla and oak character.

No brandy? Cognac is the closest substitute and gives the drink a more refined fruit profile.

No orgeat? A quality almond syrup can work, but avoid products with an artificial candy-like flavor.

Equipment

  • Rocks glass
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • Citrus juicer
  • Crushed ice

More Than a Sweet Tiki Drink

The Scorpion works because each ingredient covers a different part of the flavor structure. Rum keeps the base light, brandy adds richness, orange juice softens the drink, and lime supplies a firm acidic edge. Orgeat ties the mixture together with almond sweetness and a rounded texture.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Replace the light rum with aged rum for deeper vanilla and oak notes.
  • Split the rum between light and dark styles for a richer variation.
  • Use Cognac instead of standard brandy.
  • Increase the lime juice slightly when using a particularly sweet orange juice.
  • Reduce the orgeat slightly for a drier finish.
  • Add a small amount of pineapple juice for a softer tropical variation.
  • Serve the recipe in a tiki mug when one is available.
  • Double or triple the recipe for a shared Scorpion bowl, then dilute carefully and serve over plenty of ice.

Helpful Tips

  • Use freshly squeezed lime juice for clean acidity.
  • Shake the orgeat bottle before measuring.
  • Chill the serving glass before adding crushed ice.
  • Taste the orange juice because its sweetness and acidity vary.
  • Use fresh crushed ice rather than partially melted ice.
  • Do not overpour the orgeat, which can quickly make the drink heavy.
  • Garnish with mint near the straw so its aroma reaches the drinker.
  • For batching, combine the spirits and orgeat in advance. Add the citrus juices shortly before shaking and serving.
  • Pair with grilled shrimp, pork skewers, spicy noodles, or salty roasted nuts.
